Honoring the Seasons of Grief
Tuesday, September 24, 2019
6:30 - 8:30 p.m.
at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton
Losing a loved one can be a painful and lonely journey. This grief journey elicits a host of emotions, feelings, thoughts and reactions. Grief does not require being fixed, cured or remedied. It is a natural, normal and necessary response to loss. It requires us to honor it. This FREE educational and supportive seminar for grieving adults will offer:
- an understanding of grief and the grief process;
- approaches toward healing from our losses; and
- ways to honor our grief experience with the rhythms and changes of the seasons.
About the Presenter: Melissa Minkley, MSW, CT is the co-founder of Healing Life’s Losses, LLC an organization that is committed to offering services of education, training and support to those who are grieving and those who companion them. She is a social worker with over 25 years of experience in health care supporting individuals and families from diagnosis through end of life and bereavement. She has companioned adults and children in individual, support group, workshop and retreat settings, focusing on enhancing one’s holistic well-being. In addition, she serves as the Executive Director for Healing Hearts of Waukesha County, providing grief support to children and families coping with an array of losses. Her personal experience of loss as a child and adult has given Melissa insight into the impact grief has on individuals, families and friends.

Bereavement ministry is a ministry of presence based on companioning one another through the difficult losses in life. Already bereavement offers funeral assistance, regular follow-up after a funeral, grief support groups, participation in the Mass of Remembrance on November 2 each year, and seminars which are educational and supportive. A possible future expansion of the ministry may be a prayer shawl ministry. You are invited to extend your love and compassion in serving others who are grieving.
Please see the areas below for specific volunteering opportunities:
Volunteers from bereavement ministry primarily serve as parish representatives and resource people during funerals at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton. They assist family members and funeral directors during visitations and funerals but are not involved in funeral planning or one-on-one support. They help at funerals by working from a checklist with basic tasks such as unlocking doors, turning on lights and heat, acting as greeters, and returning the facility to original order when finished.
Volunteers mail sympathy cards to families immediately after the funeral, a letter three-months after the funeral with grief support information, and a sympathy card at the one-year anniversary. In addition, a follow-up call is made after the three-month mailing with an invitation to the grief support groups.

St. Elizabeth Ann Seton and Holy Apostles Parishes collaborate to offer “Companions on the Journey” grief support groups for those who are grieving the loss of a loved one. Both groups offer an opportunity for bereaved people to share their stories of grief in a safe and supportive environment while growing in their understanding of the grieving process. Two trained volunteers share the facilitation of each group meeting.
